Hammond Ashley Bass Workshop began in 1993 as a one-day master class with international virtuoso bassist and pedagogue Jeff Bradetich. Bassist and luthier Hammond Ashley, then 91, sat in on the class. The next year, after his death, it was named the Hammond Ashley Memorial Double Bass Workshop. Now it is a week long workshop at SPU every June, with guest faculty including symphony players, International Society of Bassists award winners, and jazz notables. Classes range from beginning ensembles to solo master classes, with students from ages 8 to 70.
Three Day Workshop for Beginning Level: Wednesday July 22nd-Friday July 24th
Five Day Workshop for Intermediate and Advanced Levels: Monday July 20th-Friday July 24th
Each workshop will offer highly concentrated study for bassists. Activities will include technique classes, solo classes, orchestral excerpts classes, jazz instruction, bass ensembles, faculty recitals, and student recitals.
The days begin at 9am and end with recitals in the evening featuring our outstanding faculty and students. The last day ends with a bass orchestra performance featuring all participants and faculty performing together enmasse.
